We have a new leader in the Global Sub Top 50, but he’s not exactly a newcomer in our charts. In fact, he’s the most-subscribed creator in YouTube history, and arguably the platform’s most famous name. I’m talking, of course, about MrBeast.
The North Carolina-based creator (whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson) ended BRUNO’s three-week run atop the Global Sub Top 50. The Ukrainian creator dropped to third after MrBeast added three million new subscribers during the first full week of May. Those gains pushed his YouTube-leading subscriber total up to 484 million. By the end of the summer, he’ll become the first creator to cross the 500 million mark.
YouTube challenges are becoming more extreme
Once upon a time, trendy challenges on YouTube were both simple and accessible. If you could stack a lot of cups or hit long basketball shots, you could turn it into a career.
Decades later, a cavalcade of challenge creators has upped the ante. If you want to stand out in today’s competitive YouTube environment, then you need to outdo 20 years of nonstop one-upsmanship.
Nat Cervera is ready to play that game. The Mexican creator offers a wide variety of videos on her namesake YouTube channel, but her extreme challenges pull in more views than her other Shorts. If anyone plans on completing a more impressive feat than her, they’ll need to find a salt hotter than the world’s hottest salt or extend her all-day Disney movie marathon into a 48-hour event.
So far, it seems like YouTube users are more interested in watching Cervera rather than trying to beat her challenges. She added 330,000 new subscribers during the week that was, pushing her from 85th place in our subscriber ranking all the way up to 27th. That seven-day performance is more of a masterstroke than Cervera’s ten-hour version of the Mona Lisa.
Are YouTube challenge videos a bubble waiting to burst? Creators like Norme have already pushed the genre so far that it has spawned ethical concerns. How long will it be before human limitations turn unprecedented endurance-based accomplishments into a thing of the past?
If that’s the endgame we’re headed for, there will at least be some high highs along the way. Extreme challenges turn heads, allowing creators like Cervera to land collaborations with the biggest stars on YouTube and beyond. Fellow Mexican chart topper Ricky Limón shows up in one of her most popular Shorts.
If Ricky Limón isn’t a big enough name for you, how about the GOAT of the NFL? Jesse James West‘s shredded physique has given him an upper hand in physical challenges, and he’s gotten big enough that Tom Brady has noticed his musclebound prowess. James got 290,000 new subscribers at the start of May to round out this week’s Global Sub Top 50, and his collab with Brady helped him get his highest weekly viewership sum of 2026.
Ultimately, the appeal of YouTube challenge videos goes back to the man in the #1 spot. MrBeast first blew up by doing more extreme challenges than anyone before him, and that effort connected him to celebrities from the worlds of film, TV, sports, and the internet.
Creators already copy many of MrBeast’s practices, from his video titles to his thumbnail designs to his big-budget competitions. His penchant for unprecedented challenges is just one more quality to ape, and it’s paying dividends for risers like Cervera and West — for now.
